On The Road Again - Willie Nelson
While Hassan and Colin are on their way to Tennesee, they stop in Kentucky. Colin is still upset about Katherine breaking up with him. After the pit stop, they get back in the 'hearse' and are back on the road, this song would be a perfect song to be playing. "Fourty miles down the road, still in Kentucky, Colin had curled up agasint the passenger window..." (p. 24)
Bad Day - Daniel Powter
Once in Tennesee, Colin finally gets the courage to call Katherine XIX. He calls her, but she dosen't answer so he leaves a voicemail saying he loves her still. Within 5 minutes, Katherine calls him back. She tells him they should stay friends and that she's happy with their decision to breakup. Colin talks about how he hasn't really cried about the situation yet. While in this scene he finally cries about it, this song could be playing. "He was finally - finally crying. He rememebered their arms entangled, their stupid little inside jokes..." (p. 105)
Let Her Go - Passenger
Before Colin gets the courage to call Katherine, Hassan tells him that he dosen't think he should. Hassan says it's the worst idea ever and that 'Colin's covered in gasoline and that the phone is a lit match'. He's trying to convince Colin to let Katherine go, so what would make more sense than to have 'Let Her Go' in the soundtrack.
I won't give up - Jason Mraz
Throughout the book Colin wants to forget about Katherine, but he can't seem to give up on her. When he calls her in Tennesee, and Katherine tells him that she's happy with the fact that they broke up, Collin wants to convince her that shes wrong. "And even though he wanted to say, We're sopposed to be friends remember? And what is it? New Boyfriend?" (p. 105) I won't give up would represent that even though she keeps pushing him away, Colin won't give up on trying to get Katherine back.
Thinking about you - Frank Ocean
Throughout the novel, Colin shows signs of having feelings for Lindsey. When they are in Lindsey's room talking about his theorem, Colin finds himself thinking about how cool and interesting she is. While shes talking, he puts his hand on hers but pulls it away after a few moments. 'Thinking about you' would put more emphasis on the fact that Colin secretly does think about Lindsey as more of a friend.
Replay - IYAZ
In the novel, Colin spends his whole life obsessing over girls named Katherine. He dates 19 different Katherines, and it makes his life seem like it's stuck on replay. This song could be played during he many times Colin talked about all the different Kathrines to Hassan.
Nothing Left to Lose - Matt Kearny
Near the end of the book, Colin and Lindsey become closer friends. When Lindsey finds out that 'The Other Colin' cheated on her with Katrina, she breaks up with him. Soon Colin and Lindsey start dating. 'Nothng Left to Lose' is a song about a relationship and where it will end up. The song could fit in perfectly when Lindsey opens up to Colin and takes him to her secret hideout in the cave.
Our Town - James Taylor
'Our Town' is about how time, people, and places change. Throughout the book Colin really progesses from a nerd who obsessed over 19 different girls, to a someone who is more relaxed. After Lindsey and Colin start dating, he uses his theorem on how long they will last, but soon realizes that he can't use a math problem to predict his love life.
Stuck for the Summer - Two Hours Traffic
In the very beginning of the novel, Colin is graduating highschool. Colin and Hassan decided that this summer needs to be different. As a result, they end up getting into Hassan's car for a road trip to wherever they end up. 'Stuck for the Summer' quotes "Nobody wants to get stuck for the summer, started with one and we ended with another. Scratch your name in my side, it's all about making good time." This could relate to how Colin decides that this summer is going to be different than the others. The 'scratch your name in my side' lyric could also relate to how Lindsey's left an impact on his life, in only one summer.
Over You - Matt Wertz
Colin bases his whole life around the past 19 Katherines that hes dated and perfecting a math equation that proves weather he was the dumpee or dumper. 'Over You' quotes "You closed the door, I left it open, holding out for what be someday". This summer has changed his outlook on his love life. After realizing that you can't base your life around a math equation, he stops obsessing over the past.
